Bev Marks achieves 46% growth in sales thanks to Australian Made

Bev Marks Australia is achieving resounding success and is as one of the Australian Made Campaign’s first Campaign Partners, boasting an impressive sales increase since using the logo for the first time in 2001.

Bev Marks Australia began life in 1989 as Bev Marks Discount Bedding Centre with two inner city locations in Melbourne, selling Australian made and imported bedding and bedroom furniture. In 1999, the company made the decision to sell only Australian Made products and today Bev Marks beds is Australia’s fastest growing bedding and furniture retailer franchise.

Founder and CEO of Bev Marks Beds Australia, David Langworthy, attributes the company’s success to only selling Australian Made products and being part of the Australian Made Campaign.

“At Bev Marks we attribute our success directly to our decision to sell only Australian Made products and display the Australian Made logo,” says David Langworthy.

In 1999 a decision to launch Bev Marks Beds Australia was made after reading an article in Choice magazine where a survey had revealed that 20% of the Australian population preferred to buy Australian Made. In 2006, Australian Made Campaign conducted research which showed that 61% of Australian consumers preferred to buy Australian made furniture and bedding.

“We were looking for a unique selling position and the realisation that in 1999 more than 50% of the furniture sold in Australia was imported prompted us to solely embrace Australian Made,” says David Langworthy.

“In 2001, we began using the Australian Made logo in our point of sale advertising and this simply opened the floodgates. The Australian public voted with their feet and that year our sales turnover was just over $1 million and we had 5 employees. This year our turnover will be in excess of $36 million with over 100 employees in 9 different locations in Victoria. Proudly, we did this without borrowing 1 cent.”

In recognition of the high level of support Bev Marks Australia shows towards supporting Australian Made and the Australian furniture industry, the company was declared an official "Campaign Partner" of the Australian Made Campaign.

“In 2005 Bev Marks was invited to join the Australian Made Campaign as the first official Campaign Partner. We immediately accepted and in 2006 we had a 46% growth in sales. We budgeted for a moderate growth of 15% in 2007, however, on current figures we project that we will have at least a 40% growth in sales this year.”
