Since taking over the premise of the former Holden factory in South Australia, sonnen has leveraged the advanced manufacturing skills of the local workforce to produce fully-integrated, intelligent Australian Made energy storage systems.
sonnen began the production of its pioneering sonnenBatteries in Australia in 2018, employing most of its production employees from Holden, and hiring locals across its warehousing, shipping, call centre and technical service departments.
sonnen APAC CEO and Managing Director sonnen Australia Pty Ltd, Nathan Dunn, explained the combination of 10 years of German innovation in design and engineering, along with local production expertise in Australian manufacturing has helped sonnen to deliver thousands of quality and intelligent home battery storage systems across Australia and New Zealand.
“Our customers are proud to know when they purchase a sonnenBatterie they are helping to create jobs in Australia and to grow Australia’s economy. They are also supporting Australian component suppliers in growing their businesses as sonnen also sources local components to manufacture our home batteries in Australia,” he said.
“Our installer partners take pride in recommending sonnenBatteries to potential customers and make it a point to highlight that our batteries are made in Australia. They say it makes a unique selling point because homeowners trust and respect the high quality of Australian made products.
“Australian Made is both locally and internationally recognised, and to have attained the Australian Made certification allows us to leverage the awareness consumers have of this iconic logo while recognising our local commitment and development in Australia.”
The Australian Made logo is proudly displayed on all of sonnen’s flagship sonnenBatterie eco 9.53 hybrid, which is distributed to the Australian and New Zealand markets, with Asia to follow in the future.
“The Australian Made logo has been around for more than 30 years, and is a powerful sales and marketing asset for sonnen. The logo is also an important asset for consumers who trust and recognise the quality of certified Australian Made products around the world,” Mr Dunn said.
“sonnenBatteries achieved the Australian Made certification in less than 12 months since we started manufacturing at Elizabeth, which is a big achievement. sonnen produces over 300 sonnenBatteries on average each month and has the capacity to manufacture up to 12,000 batteries in a year.”
“Being an Australian home battery manufacturer has also helped sonnen to access home battery subsidy schemes in South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales, as state governments see the benefits of supporting our investment in cleantech manufacturing right here in Australia.”
In December 2019, sonnen was awarded the Minister’s Investment Award for Research & Development at Australia’s 57th National Export Awards in recognition of its positive contribution and investment to create jobs and drive innovation.
As a local manufacturer, during the COVID-19 pandemic sonnen was able to quickly adapt its production procedures and minimise the supply chain disturbances that many of its overseas competitors experienced.
Mr Dunn said, “The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the global supply chain, and it has made our government, industries and businesses evaluate how important it is to support local manufacturing in Australia which has been on the decline over the years.”
“sonnen has been in a fortunate position of being able to maintain its inventory of sonnenBatteries during this period. As a business with production facilities in Australia, we’ve been able to minimise the impact of global disruption to supply chains through the ability to rely on our local partners in Australia.”
